barely touching

ARTIST STATEMENT  -  BARELY TOUCHING

When Kelly and I agreed to produce this collaborative project entitled “Barely Touching”, we had one basic premise, that this work would reflect our personal reactions to the societal challenges erupting during the year 2020. We envisioned that video would be a main component. And it was obvious that the project would evolve in unexpected ways.

Our videos counterbalance each other. Both address a deep sense of longing and the tension between connection and disconnection in relationship, ie. human, environmental and societal.

While Kelly’s work references distance and the ethereal, my own work tends to be close up and visceral. Both pose open a question. “Where are we headed?” Both present unease and challenge and both are threaded through with an underlying reliance on the healing inherent in beauty and the recognition that moving beyond the personal is the only position that can save us and the planet.
